The Month You Were Born
New stories about the month you, or friends and family were born.
What
happened in June 1968 |
| June 1968 was the month that
saw the death of britain's much loved comedian Tony
Hancock along with the assasination of JFK's brother Robert Kennedy in Los
Angeles.
On a happier note Sir Matt Busby received a Knighthood
and the Rolling Stones, 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' was at No.1 in the charts. | On June 6th in Los Angeles Senator
Robert Kennedy was shot and after 20 hours of work by surgeons trying
to save him died at the Good Samaritan Hospital of his wound.
A death closer to home was that of
Tony Hancock who had become famous with 'Hancocks Half Hour' and
was probably the best loved comedian at the time.
Tony Hancock committed suicide in a Sydney hotel room and although
his life was troubled he will still be remembered with affection
by many as a fantastic comedian.

What happened
in April 1968 |
| It has to be
said that April 1968 was not the happiest month of that year as far as news
stories went. Two great people died before their time along with riots in
the US and Germany were just a few of the stories to make the news. Here
is our quick roundup. | One of the biggest stories of the month, and
maybe the year that has had far reaching percussions all around the world
was the killing of Dr Martin Luther King in Memphis on April 4th.
Born in 1929 Dr King first came to
prominence in the US by leading a bus boycot in Alabama in 1956 and then
for his "I had a dream" speech in 1963.
Dr King spent many years fighting for the rights of black americans along
with helping the poor and weak whether black or white.
|
 | | Dr King's death
caused riots in many major US cities including NEw York and Detroit which
led to a bill being passed that made it illegal to refuse housing on the
ground of race. | | On April 7th
Jim Clark, who was a ouble F1 motor racing champion and leading the 1968
season championship was killed instantly when his car skidded in to trees
on a straight at the Hockenheim circuit in Germany.
Clark was considered by his many to be the best of his generation winning
25 grand prix in only 7 seasons in F1.
A farmers son from the Scottish borders Jim Clark was only 32 years ol when
he died.
| April 1968 saw a speach
that has been talked about for many years that was not considered to be
helpful to British race relations at the time.
Enoch Powell made his infamous 'Rivers of Blood' speach in Birmingham when
he said that Britain was causing itself problems by allowing 50,000 dependants
of immigrants in to the country each year. MPs isolated the Tory MP but
some were worried that he was speaking the worries of many in the country.
| | Other news from April 1968 included the first
decimal coins going in to circulation for the 5 pence piece and the 10 pence
piece and the biggest UK drugs bust to date when police seized LSD worth
£1.5 milliion in London.
On a lighter note Spain won the Eurovision Song Contest!!!!!

|
| May 1968 was again remembered
mainly for the riots of Paris but happier occassions also occured with an
english team doing well in Europe and the birth of a famous 'pop star'. | May 1968 was a time of riots in Paris
with students, and then workers striking and protesting through the streets
demanding the fall of the government run by Charles de Gaulle an a more
equal society.
These riots are still remebered today by more left-wing and socialist groups
as a defining time in french politics. |
 | | On 29th May Manchester
Utd. Beat Benfica of Portugal 4-1 in the final of the European Cup at Wembley.
Will they match this sporting feat of 40 years ago by beating Chelsea in
Moscow? | | In the world of music Kylie Minogue was born
on 28th May 1968 in Melbourne, Australia. Kylie Minogue was one of the most
succesful artists of the late 80s and early 90s. Her first UK single, "I
Should Be So Lucky", climbed up the charts to the top in 1988.
There are many women out there that would like to look as good as Kylie
while celebrating their 40th birthday.
Also, in late May 1968 the four Beatles came together to record a magnificently
diverse collection of music, released as a double album in a blank white
cover. This album was called The White Album. | | May
1968 also saw the Krays held on suspicion of murder. The Kray twins, Reginald
and Ronnie aged 34, and their 41-year-old brother Charlie were arrested
after a series of dawn raids in London. | | The
