An A to Z of 80s Music

A It would be hard not to mention one of the greatest ever pop bands so A is for Abbawho had a number 1 in August 1980 with 'Winner takes it all'.
Another great group of the early 80s who influenced many a girl in my class's make-up were 'Adam & The Ants.
B There are many groups that could be mentioned here but Blondie were a favourite of mine. Formed in 1974 with Debbie Harry as a founder member they had their first hit in the US with 'Heart of Glass' and their fifth album produced the classic 'The Tide Is High' which was a massive hit in the UK. Still going strong after 30 years they are also inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.

There are so many mentions that B can bring up with bands such as varied as Bad Manners, Bon Jovi, B52s, Bronski Beat, Billy Ocean and the Blow Monkeys but the letter B could not be finished without mentioning Band Aid.

C Christopher Cross, Chicago, Crowded House, Cyndi Lauper and many more had fame and fortune throughout the 80s. Chris Deburgh's 'Lady in Red' was a favourite at the end of the evening and has gone on to be the first dance of many couples. Arguably the biggest band in this section has to be Culture Club with the lead singer Boy George. In 1982 they released their debut album 'Kissing to be Clever' and this produced several hits including 'Do you really want to hurt me' which was a UK no.1. In 1983 Culture Club released their most successful album, Colour By Numbers. from which Karma Chameleon, charted number one in the US and UK. The band split in 1988 and tried to reform in 1998.

DAgain, there are many that could be mentioned but two stand out in Dire Straits and Duran Duran.

Dire Straits released their last album of the 1980s in 1985 when they released Brothers in Arms. It sold around 25 million copies worldwide. The single, “Money for Nothing, peaked at number 4 in the UK. Other singles included, Brothers in Arms, and Walk of Life.

Duran Duran broke ground upon filming some early, primitive music videos. The single, Planet Earth, reached number 12 in the UK,

The next Duran Duran album, Rio, made it as far as number 2 in the UK in 1982. The album included singles like, Hungry Like the Wolf, which peaked at number 5 and Rio, which peaked at number 9.

Duran Duran's most successful album came in 1983 with, Seven and the Ragged Tiger. The album was a number one UK album. The album included singles such as Union of the Snake, New Moon on Monday, and The Reflex.

E Eagles, Earth Wind & Fire, ELO Eddy Grant, Elton John, Erasure, Eric Clapton & Europe (The Final Countdown) all had hits in the 80s but my favourite has to be the Eurythmics.

Eurythmics second album was among their most famous, Sweet Dreams. This album charted at number 3 in the UK. The single, “Sweet Dreams, became a number one pop single in 1983. Also in this year Here Comes the Rain Again, which rose to number 4. The Eurythmics were fantastic live with Annie Lenox holding the crowd, me included in the palm of her hand.
FFine Young Cannibals and Frankie Goes To Hollywood scored hits along with the ever popular Fleetwood Mac.
Does anybody remember Frida? If you do please let me know.

GThere is varied mix for the letter G including Gloria Estafan and the Miami Sound Machine and at the other end of the spectrum Guns & Roses. George Michael was big as a solo artist in thelate 80s after spitting from Andrew Ridgley who he had formed the band Wham which I am sure will be mentioned under the w's. Another big group of the 80s that are still touring now were Genesis.

During the 1980s, Genesis released 4 studio albums, which were all number one albums in the UK. The first of these came in 1980 with the album Duke. In both England and the US, the album reached Platinum certification.

In 1982, Genesis released their number two album of the 1980s, Three Sides Live. In 1983, Genesis released a self-titled album. The album quickly ascended to the number one position. The single, Thats All, was Genesis's first top ten US single.

The final Genesis album of the 1980s was Invisible Touch. The album was released in 1986. The title track became a number one single in the US. Other singles from the album included, Land of Confusion, and In Too Deep.

This is the first section of my 80s music Ato Z.
